Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an assessment take?

Assessment can take approximately an hour depending on the child and how much we have to discuss.

How long are therapy sessions?

This depends on the age of the child and what we are working on. The usual session length would be 45 mins which includes discussion with parents about homework and progress.

Do I have to take part in my child’s therapy sessions?

It is preferable to have parent/caregiver involvement in the sessions as then you can see what we are working on and practise at home.

Will we have to do homework?

Your child will make the most progress if work given in therapy is practiced regularly at home. Therapy homework should not be time consuming and can be done in five minute blocks.

How do I know if my child needs therapy?

You are welcome to phone me to have a chat about your child’s communication before booking an appointment.

Will you speak to my child’s teacher?

With permission from you, observations of your child’s communication can be carried out in school/early childhood centre if necessary. I will not discuss your child with anyone without your permission.

Can we attend therapy sessions if we are also on the waiting list to be seen in the public system?

I can see your child until they are seen by an SLT in the public system or you can choose to continue with both services. I am able to liaise with other SLTs involved with your child.

How often do we attend therapy sessions?

Children are usually seen weekly but can be seen fortnightly.
